The Rewritten Love: A Second Beginning by Max Charming Chapter 515
In a hidden basement in Hallsmouth, someone forcefully kicked Fred to the ground. Fred did not fight back. Instead, he resisted the excruciating pain in his chest and attempted to stand up with one knee on the ground.
However, the man kicked him again before he could even do so. This time, Fred did not stand back up. He lay in the corner and grunted in pain as blood trickled out of the corner of his mouth. Meanwhile, the other men surrounding them hung their heads low and did not dare to step forward.
Nobody knew what had happened. Zach had not returned in seven to eight years, yet he threw a fit the moment he came back.
Nobody dared to provoke him. Zach stared down at the man beside his feet. “There won’t be a next time,” he said dangerously. Just then, a frail-looking man ran up to Zach.
“Duncan is dead.”
Zach frowned in displeasure, “Who killed him?” The man bowed and replied, “Judging from their car, it was someone from the Arnold family. Duncan almost got the young lady, and that man shot him in the head. Oh boy, his brain matter was all over the place.”
Zach and his men were not exactly blatant when carrying out their operations and were much more discreet than they were in the past.
With the current strict rules and regulations, only people from the Arnold family dared to gun someone down when the sun hadn’t set yet.
“What if the Arnold family gets involved? If Mr. Arnold learns about the young lady almost getting hurt, the few of us… We surely won’t get away.” Zach kept a stony expression. “I’ll handle the matter. How about the other two?” he asked.
The frail-looking man answered fearfully, “One fell off the cliff during our car chase with him. We still haven’t found his body for the time being, but it’s likely blown into pieces. And the other one… It’s said he fled to Northern Myanmar, where the Golden Triangle is. It’s a lawless place with many different factions, so it’s hard for us to do anything.”
“Send someone to keep an eye on him.”
“Yes.” Zach lowered his gaze and fell into deep thought. ‘Why was Duncan near the school?’ he wondered. There was a storm of emotions in his eyes.
Ethan brought Madelyn back to the Arnold residence. Madelyn recalled the incident on their way home and felt terrified as it finally sank in. When they got home, the servants brought over a glass of water.
The two sat on the couch. Madelyn leaned into Ethan’s arms with a pale face. Then, Ethan asked the servants to leave. “It’s alright now. In the future… I won’t let you be alone. I can’t imagine losing you.”
Madelyn listened to his soothing voice and gradually calmed down.
“Where’s Mya? How’s she?”
“Leyton said she’s alright. She’s just a little frightened. She’ll be fine after a good night’s rest. You can chat with me for a bit if you’re still feeling scared. “How was your test today? Did you do well?”
Madelyn nodded, “It was decent.” “Well, I’ve spoken to Prof. Monet. You’re doing pretty well among this batch of students, so there’s a high chance of you getting accepted.”
“If that happens, I’d be ecstatic. But if… If I got admitted because of you, I’d still be ridiculed even if I got in.”
“Do you not think you have what it takes? Or are you certain that I’d do something like that?”
Madelyn stared at the vase on the coffee table.
“You’re too good to me. You’re always helping me achieve whatever I want. But… Can you not intervene this time? I want to get in with my own capabilities. I can still go to Ventropolis University even if I don’t get in. Life is filled with countless possibilities; I’ll take another route if this one doesn’t work out. No matter what happens, my goal remains the same.”
