Reuben POV
“You do realise your Alpha is dead?” I march over to the warriors guarding the cave still in complete disbelief from their abandoning of their own people.
“We were ordered to guard the cave no matter what.” A Sickle Peak warrior responds to me, as they all stand to attention.
“Without an Alpha your orders are no longer valid. Can I suggest you return to protect your people and pack lands?” Evelyn is next to me in no time, ordering at the warriors.
They all look at each other confused in what to do, whose orders to follow.
“Without an Alpha you are now under my command, go back to the pack. Secure your borders.” I command unleashing my aura on to them.
As part of the Red Stone alliance still, they now fall under my supervision until I can sort a new alpha out for them. Unless Natascha will become the new alpha? Shit…she’s got a surprise waiting for her when she comes back.
As the warriors head out, we start to enter the dark and damp cave.
It’s not helpful that it is already night time outside and the more we move into the cave, the more moonlight we lose.
The night had a coldness to it, something that catches on the end of your breath. A coldness that was lingering in the cave.
My wolf lends me his night vision, my eyes scaling the path ahead of me for movement.
“Warriors to remain near the entrance to avoid an ambush and to stop him running out.” I order through the Red Stone pack link.
“Understand Alpha.” Nate’s voice enters my head as he turns and backtracks to organise the men.
There’s nothing…we are just walking and walking. How long exactly was this cave. I didn’t remember it being this bloody large before. Or deep.
I’ve held Evelyn’s hands numerous of times to help her step down in the darkness. She hasn’t admitted it but I’m concerned with her wolf slightly less active, she isn’t getting her enhanced vision to see in this never ending blackness.
Just when I feel we are falling for a wild goose chase from Anwir’s supposed tip …I hear a growl ahead of me.
It’s him alright. I wouldn’t forget that growl, I spent most of my childhood trying to avoid it.
“Evelyn, get behind me now.” I seethe at her through the mate bond, already pulling her behind me.
I feel her frustration at me but I don’t give a shit if she’s pissed off at me, but I’ll make sure he doesn’t get anywhere near her.
We keep moving deeper into the cave, a foreboding sense washing over me as I see something on the cave wall.
I can’t make it out without more light. My night vision not exactly made to look at cave art in the pitch black.
I pull my phone from out of my trouser pocket, switching the torch on to take a closer look. Touching the cave wall as I shine the torch I find pictures of animals…this one in particular a black crow.
I turn immediately as I hear some kind of commotion at the entrance of the cave.
“Noah…” Evelyn orders at Noah to go check it out.
Evelyn POV
I was feeling slightly on edge, the problem with a cave is there is only one way in and out.
And we hadn’t come across anything yet. Just how deep did this cave go. I hope not to the very pits of hell.
It would be fitting if Odin was in here though after all. Reuben seems to have stopped, pulling his phone out and using the torch to look at the cave wall.
His hands touch an odd picture…is that a crow?
A commotion is heard at the cave entrance and I order at Noah to go check it out.
As my Beta leaves, I turn to the cave wall next to me, my own hands running up the cold damp stone as I find picture as well.
In fact the wall is littered with colourful cave people like drawings that I can just make out with my enhanced night vision.
Owls…pigs…a snake.
I touch on the snake picture, my fingers brushing across the outline of the slightly faded animal. I trace the picture down towards the base of the cave ground.
I bend down slightly to get a better look of it when I hear a sword being swung at me.
My adrenaline kicks in.
Already bent down I drop myself to the floor, my legs kicking out and swiping his own legs from under him.
