Reuben POV
“My Beta here will put you in your own holding facilities until we decide on the right pack for you.” Evelyn turns to Noah for him to actvate her command.
I can feel the confusion of my own warriors through the Red Stone pack link.
Hear their voices echo through the bond …”She’s letting him go?”, “This is a mistake, he can’t be trusted..”
Their Silver Moon comrades don’t seem to share the same surprise as them. They know their alpha well, know her level of kindness and dare I say it…forgiveness.
Not forgiveness to forget the threat, but to give him a chance to redeem himself, to show she did everything in her power to try.
I might not like it but this is how she was raised, different from me. But I have to try and respect her choices nonetheless…try.
He’s already touched her once and my wolf is fighting for dominance to pull her back from him.
His grimy hands pawing at her legs for forgiveness. She starts to walk towards me, her eyes meeting mine before I see him pull something out of the bottom of his trousers.
He knocks Noah unconscious by hitting him on the back of the head with the gun, a loud gasp leaving Noah from the brutality of the hit.
“Evelyn!” I push on the link as the gun is aimed at her.
My wolf speeds us to her, to knock her out of the way of the bullet that has been fired.
“Pup.” Is all I can hear from my wolf, as I, at the last second have to turn us both to take the hit of the fall.
The baby’s safety causing unmeasurable panic to rush through me.
As Renard’s lifeless body slumps onto the floor, I cup Evelyn’s face to check she is conscious. That she isn’t in pain.
“Evelyn?”
“I’m fine…” Her face is directly on top of me, as is her entire body. At least I know her and the baby didn’t feel the force of the fall.
“Don’t move…” I calmly state to her as I see the blood-dripping heart in her hand, still beating. Her eyes follow mine to find the organ in her right hand.
“Do you want me…”
“No, I’m fine with it.” She surprises me as she stands herself up and tosses the heart onto the floor by the dead body of the Sickle Peak pack.
She shakes the blood of her hands before one of my warriors comes forward with his shirt for her to use as a cloth.
“Are you okay?” I look at her, my hands feeling her over for a bullet wound. He must have missed. Thank the Goddess.
“I’m fine Reuben…”
“Then what the fuck was that?” Knowing she was safe and uninjured, I felt happy to let her feel my wrath at her actions.
“What was what?”
“You let him go?”
“I didn’t let him go, I arrested him.” She crosses her arms at her chest, her hip slightly sticking out.
“Pricks like that are beyond help love.”
“Look I get it, but he’s dead now, dead from his own actions. I didn’t have to make that choice, he did it for me.”
“And you could have fucking got yourself killed in the crossfire…” I pull at my hair, she was literally turning me slowly insane at this moment in time.
“I stand by my beliefs Reuben, I’m not a dictator. He was unarmed. I won’t kill someone in cold blood. If they attack fine, if they are attacking my pack lands fine…but he was backed into a corner…it felt inhumane.” Her arms have uncrossed now, as she turns to look at Noah unconscious on the floor.
Her worry for him resonating through the mate bond.
“Goddess woman, you are going to put me into an early grave.”
“Can I just say Alpha Evelyn made the right call. She was protecting her immortal soul…” Anwir interrupts as he remains seated, having watched the enter spectacle unfold.
“What the hell would you know…” I growl at him. Why was he even still here? Surely this was all above his age rating?
