141. The More You Love…
In The Evening,…
Skyline Bar boomed with loud music, the vibrating beats sounding like a thousand bells in Heidi’s head.
A place she’d hoped she’d find solace created an even more stream of chaos in her head.
Holding the wine glass in her right hand, her dazed eyes studied the wine swirling in its glass.
“Why aren’t you drinking, Heidi?” Sitting beside her, Kate nudged her playfully. “Remember we’re here to have a blast, not sit and just stare at each other.”
“Uhm, Ms. Anderson, isn’t Mr. Anderson coming?” Isla asked.
“The dude’s out of town,” Kate said, her attention still on Heidi. “He went back to GreyHills for some urgent business. Will be back in a few days.”
From the couch behind them, strange noises sounded followed by the sound of ruffling fabrics.
“Not here, Babe. Wait until we get home.”
Yet, Zach was kissing the girl as if he’d devour her whole.
Kate’s eyes dimmed, irritation flashing in her eyes. “Get a room, Zach Olsen! Yeah, we’re all adults but no one’s interested in your free smutty show.”
“Hey, it’s not my fault that you’re single.” Zach gave her a taunting smile. “You can’t handle it probably because you wish you were in her place.”
“Zach Olsen, where’s your intelligence?” Kate turned around.
scrunching up her nose and glaring. ” Aren’t you stupid by thinking a girl like me is single? Should I tell you the number of men bombarding my inbox every single day?”
“Oh, I’m stupid, aren’t I?” Zach relaxed on the couch, pushing the girl aside and buttoning up his shirt. “Kate Anderson, who can’t even hold her liquor, thinks the great Zach Olsen is stupid.”
“You must have seen me drink before.” Kate laughed sarcastically. “It’s no wonder you’re full of shit!”
Zach only smiled, pushing the wine bottle towards her. “I’ve not seen you drink before. Well, prove you’re not stupid as well by emptying this wine’s bottle.”
“Challenge accepted!” Kate grabbed it. “Because of that, you will drink a whole bottle as well.”
“Believe me, I’ll drink two bottles.”
“Well, I’ll drink three!”
While the two bantered, Heidi was lost in her thoughts, staring at the wine glass, still dazed.
Isla nudged her gently. “What’s wrong, Ms. Olsen? Why aren’t you drinking?”
Heidi dropped the wine. “I don’t feel like drinking it.”
Just staring at the wine made her want to belch.
“We’re here to celebrate your promotion, Ms. Olsen. On the contrary, Mr. Olsen and Ms. Anderson are having more fun.”
Heidi’s eyes went to Kate and Zach who were drinking their hearts out.
The booth was filled with their banters as they downed glasses after glasses of wine.
“Mr. Olsen and Ms. Anderson seem to hate each other’s guts,” Isla murmured. “I envy their relationship, though. There’s a high chance they might become friends.”
The more you hate, the more you love.
Heidi found herself reaching for the wine glass again despite repulsing it.
Wasn’t it also true that the more you love, the more it hurts?
As true as those phrases were, they were better avoided. If only one had the power to do that.
If she’d been sane enough and controlled herself as early as the iron was still hot, things wouldn’t have gotten to this, because, after love and hate, came the irredeemable hurt.
Heidi didn’t realize that she’d been wallowing in her thoughts for long until Isla’s head slumped on her shoulder.
Obviously a bit intoxicated, Isla’s head was swaying from side to side. Heidi carefully readjusted her head to a comfortable position on the couch.
The strong stench of the wine hit her nose and her stomach churned strangely.
Staggering up, Heidi threw a glance at Zach and Kate who were still busy drinking. “I’ll use the washroom. Will be back shortly.”
And she hurried out, rushing down the corridor, one hand covering her mouth. She bumped into a man’s figure but didn’t pay heed to him due to her hastiness.
Heidi threw up all the contents of her stomach as if her intestines would disintegrate and also come out. She rinsed her mouth and wiped her lips.
On her way out of the washroom, her body almost collided with the figure of the man from before.
