140. Hurt More Than Daggers
At The AG Group.
In the vast office of the CEO, decorations stood in every corner in the form of huge artificial flower vases, and the newly installed furniture served as an element to captivate the eyes.
However, sitting on the big swivel chair, the solitary figure of the young woman had its back to the office.
Instead, her eyes were glued to the large window, her gaze traveling through it, her vision blurred by the images portrayed by her mind guided by the constant thoughts in her head.
She should be focusing on the duty ahead, instead of the scandalous imaginations occupying her thoughts.
Sometimes, she’d question the reality, and what true affection denotes.
Sometimes she’d find herself wallowing in grief and regret of letting the reigns of her emotions go into the hands of a man.
She’d been lost in her fantasy beyond redemption, and despite waking up, remnants of those fantasies lingered, serving as a reminder of what a huge fool she’d been.
Because, they hurt more than daggers, having her pride shattered not once, not twice, and not thrice.
“Ms. Olsen, the reports are here.” Isla entered the office and found Heidi spacing out. “These are from the COO’s office. Ms. Natalie Olsen has carefully hidden these finance reports which were supposedly destroyed by Harold Olsen.”
“Oh, that’s great. What else do you have for me?” Heidi faked enthusiasm, the huge circles underneath her eyes giving away the turmoil inside her.
Isla told her there was nothing else. Then she asked, “Ms. Olsen, you’re not alright. It has been over a week since you assumed the CEO’s position, but you’ve been walking around in shells.”
Was she that obvious?
Despite putting on her best smile every day, assuring everyone she was alright, Heidi’s lies wouldn’t last for long, would they?
The last thing she wanted was everyone thinking Lucas’s relationship with Tracy was giving her sleepless nights, Which was wrong.
Her constant dampened mood recently was also a huge puzzle to her.
“Hey, I told you I’m fine,” Heidi stood up, saying softly. “But it’s hard to adjust to this position. Managing this huge Group is no child’s play-”
Then she swayed, and a strong dizziness hit her head.
“Ms. Olsen, are you alright?” Isla panicked.
Heidi caught herself quickly, using the chair’s headrest as support, gripping it tight with one hand, and the other hand on her pounding forehead.
“It’s nothing.” She sat back down, scared to have even stood up in the first place.
Isla sat on the chair across from her, her eyes filled with care and worry. “If you’re not feeling well, Ms. Olsen, how about you rest for a few days at home?”
Heidi would rather work all day in the office. It served as a huge distraction therapy.
“Apart from changing the Group’s infrastructure and gaining back our old allies, there isn’t too much work to do. Don’t worry,” the workload wasn’t much to affect her well-being anyway.
Zach had kept his promise that he would lessen her burden by employing more staff, a risky decision for the Group at this stage as there was not much capital to support many employees.
A knock came from the door. Heidi gestured to Isla to get it.
On seeing Kate entering, her eyes lit up.
“Oh, Heidi, don’t give me that look!” Kate’s voice was filled with regret. “I know I should have come visit you since you entered this office, but Suzie wouldn’t let me rest for a second, now you look like a puppy who just found its master after a hundred years of loneliness.”
“Kate, I’m not mad at you,” Heidi defended.
“Well now that we’re both less busy, let’s throw a huge party to celebrate your promotion! It’s on me. I’m gonna pick the perfect dress for you.”
“It’s a good idea, Ms. Olsen,” Isla said, excited. “You’ve been working and working for the past few days. A nice party will freshen up your energy.”
Heidi nodded in agreement, feeling the need to let off some steam.
Picking her phone, she dialed Zach’s number.
“Would you mind helping us to secure the largest booth at Skyline Bar?”
“Why, Heidi? Don’t tell me you wanna be naughty for once and hook up with male escorts.”
Heidi rolled her eyes. “It’s to celebrate my promotion!”
“Oh, that’s good. I’ll do the job ASAP. I will make sure you have the best party of your life. It’s on me.”
Heidi hung up and there was a huge frown on Kate’s face.
“Zach Olsen’s not gonna come to our party, is he?”
