Noah POV
We seemed to have settled into a good routine in the past week. Reuben was away at the Red Stone pack but had insisted on leaving Nate here to be his eyes and ears.
Which worried me slightly, what was he doing that Nate couldn’t sort out for him…
I hadn’t had a moment alone with Nate for the past week.
Between training, being at the hospital with Cassandra and spending time with the twins…mine and Nate’s paths hadn’t crossed.
Well not without Evelyn also being in the same room and without the mind- link between the two packs….I couldn’t discuss what happened at the Sickle Peak pack with Nate in the safety of our heads.
And judging by his secrecy and not even being honest with Reuben, he was most likely going out of his way to avoid me mentioning it to him.
Nate was staying at the alpha home still and I purposely arrived early this morning before training hoping to catch him whilst Evelyn and the kids were asleep.
My plan worked, he was alone in the kitchen staring out into the garden with a mug of steaming hot coffee in his hands.
“Nate….What happened?” I keep my voice low, checking over my shoulder to make sure we were in fact alone.
“What do you mean?” Nate looks at me dumbfoundedly…an act I’m sure. He full well has known that I’ve been meaning to ask him.
“You know what I mean. You lied to Reuben.” I give him a knowing look with my eyes over the top of my glasses.
“I didn’t lie…I just haven’t told him yet.” He responds a little too cooly for my liking. Was he just saying that to stop me asking?
“And will you?” I push.
“Tell him what?”
“That you didn’t burn the body. Because correct me if I am wrong but there was no fire that day in or near the Sickle Peak grounds. Not a fire big enough to burn a body anyway.”
“It’s Red Stone pack business…” He starts but I cut him off, my own wolf not appreciating his words.
“Bullshit, don’t give me that. Anything that happens to Red Stone now directly or indirectly involves Silver Moon and vice versa. What happened? Where is the body?” It takes all my strength to suppress my wolf in wanting to grab Nate by the collar and shake him. What was wrong with him.
“It’s gone.”
“Gone, gone where?”
“I don’t know, I can’t explain it. All I know is that Reuben doesn’t need to hear this shit right now. All his life he’s had to sacrifice happiness, I won’t let him do it this time. He deserves this time with Evelyn and the children. Just trust me when I say, Odin is dead and the body was….disposed of.” He now moves away from the kitchen french doors and moves to sit at the kitchen table.
“What of your warriors that were in the cave?”
“What of them?” He may have sat down but with one mention of the warriors, his back has stiffened.
“Some of them have been in the hospital having panic attacks or self medicating…what the fuck actually happened?”
“Drop it Noah, please. If my men are causing problems at the hosptail…”
What the hell was going on? This wasn’t like Nate, he usually was quite forthcoming with information regarding the security of the Silver Moon Alpha family.
Why was he being so….reluctant.
Because this did involve Evelyn. She was in the cave with Reuben. She watched Odin die.
“They aren’t causing problems, I’m concerned for them. This isn’t normal behaviour.” I shake my head, he wasn’t understanding my point.
I wasn’t throwing accusations in the air, I generally worried for their well- being.
For strong, well trained warriors… something had happened. They were showing signs close to post traumatic stress disorder.
“We are werewolves, what counts as normal behaviour? I appreciate your concern but I’m handling it. If anything comes back to bite me on this, which it won’t, then you’ll be the first to know. But Odin is dead and there is nothing more to it. So as far as Reuben is concerned, the body was burned.” His voice is firm, a warning for me to drop it.
