I’ll have to come back, I’ll have to leave warriors here overnight to help defend the borders until I can broker some kind of deal with Natascha.
Nate POV
Reuben seemed keen to get Evelyn out of here…fast. And I didn’t blame him.
I was heading into the cave with some warriors, Noah and I would remain over night. Without an Alpha, the Sickle Peak was at high risk of an attack and we needed to ensure the borders were well protected until Reuben could decide what to do next.
Something odd had happened. Something had spooked the warriors earlier, Noah even returned from the cave to check on the noise.
That feeling of being watched was growing with every step deeper we took into the cave.
I hadn’t realised how far deep in Reuben and Evelyn had found Odin, until we find his dead body on the floor.
They even climbed down…what exactly was this cave and where did it lead?
“We need to retrieve the body and set it up for cremating immediately.” I update the warriors as we move forward to collect Odin’s body.
As I bend down I feel a cold wind skate across my hand, my arm snapping back up into my chest as a protective motion.
“What was that?” I hear a warrior asks. So it wasn’t just me, he felt it too.
“I don’t know, but let’s get the job done.” I demand as I go to bend down again, this time a high pitching scream shaking me to my very core. Freezing myself and the men on the spot.
It wasn’t human that’s for sure.
The warriors form into an attack position, their swords held out. I take my phone from out of my pocket and use the torch the help illuminate the cave. To see what the hell made that noise. Maybe he hadn’t died?
“Beta.” A hand lands on my shoulder and starts to pull me back. As I back step, shivers run up my spine, the temperature plummeting even more.
I turn the torch to the cave walls where pictures of animals are dotted all over the place.
Something was moving on the cave walls….
Shadows.
That’s all I can explain them as… shadows forming on the walls, their size increasing as they gain distance on Odin’s body.
Large black shadowy hands rise up on the walls and seemingly grab at something.
What? What can they possibly touch… they are shadows.
I’m not scared easily by any means, but I am currently frozen in fear. But I’m not sure if that is my own body or something else controlling me not to move.
I hold my own breath as Odin’s body starts to move, being pulled backwards. But nothing was touching him…or so it seemed.
My eyes keep flickering between Odin’s retreating body and the shadows on the wall.
His body is pulled down, his legs the last to be seen, until we can see him no more. I keep my torch on the walls but the shadows have now gone, only leaving the animal drawings.
Not trusting my own eyes I move forward to check where I last saw Odin’s body and all I can see is the cave going down and down, never ending.
“That shitted the hell out of me Beta…”
“Yeah, what the fuck was that?”
Some of the warrior’s voices filter into my head through the pack link.
“Not a word about this. You’re all sworn to secrecy. I’ll tell the Alpha, but don’t mention what just happened to anyone. They ask, we burnt the body… understood?”
“Yes Beta.” They all nod their heads to me, understanding my orders.
My body was keen to get out of these caves and I didn’t want to deprive it of its wish any longer.
We exit the caves, my mind trying to decipher what exactly had just happened.
“Block it!” I order at the warriors.
“Beta?” They look at each other and then at me in confusion.
“You heard me, block it up. Stones, bricks, cement…whatever it takes. No one is to go in there…ever.”
